As Term 2 commenced, it was fantastic to welcome the students back to the College this week in assembly.
Being together in assembly is an important part of what we do at St Columba. Amongst other things, it provides an opportunity for celebration and acknowledgement of achievement around the community. In the case of a new term, a special part of the assembly is welcoming new people to the College.
This term, we happily to welcomed these new students to the St Columba family:
- Gai in Reception
- Isla and Gurasees in Year 2
- Tanveer, Gurnoor and Xavier in Year 3
- Michael and Tiah in Year 5
- Adit, Marion and Sophia in Year 7
- Liam in Year 8 and
- Askari in Year 9.
We also welcomed the following new staff – Ms Rosa, Ms Heaney, Ms Friday, Ms O’Malley and Mr Wall, and we congratulated existing staff on their new roles – Mr Harris, Ms Derda, Mr Dowie and Mrs Symons.
We look forward with confidence to the positive ways in which these people will contribute to the diverse and rich tapestry that is the St Columba family, and to the favourable impact they will make in our striving for excellence.
In the assembly, I asked the students and staff to recognise each other – to show gratitude toward others or perhaps say, "I’m happy that you are here!". I suggested they high five, shake hands, or if they prefer, to sit quietly and think about people they are grateful for in their lives. We do this regularly and call this part of assembly ‘let love be your energy’. It is modelled on the Christian tradition of ‘giving peace’.
The energy in the assemblies this week was very positive as we spiralled up together. This is reflective of the St Columba College culture, where people care as much about others as they do about themselves. It is also a place where respect, kindness and gratitude are the air we breathe.
As you read this, please know that I am grateful the role that you are playing as a member of this extended College family.
If you are already part of our community, I look forward to seeing you around the College in the coming weeks.
