Welcome to Term 4!
This term is an important one to consolidate learning and also to farewell our Year 12s who graduate in a few weeks. Many of our Year 12s have been with us since Reception and it has been wonderful to watch them grow and develop during this time. We will farewell the cohort when the whole College gathers in the afternoon of Thursday 3 November in the Gymnasium. Awards will be presented and their Reception buddy will accompany them for the last time. The following morning, staff will arrive from 6am to prepare and cook breakfast for the Year 12s, as is tradition at the College. Later that morning, we will hold a Graduation Liturgy with families and finally the Graduation Dinner will be held on the evening of Thursday 24 November at the Entertainment Centre. I want to acknowledge our Year 12 Prefects and in particular our College Captains for their positive contribution this year. Gemma Eckermann and Erasmo Di Fava have been wonderful role models and have admirably led the College. We wish all Year 12s the very best and hold them in our prayers as they complete their final studies.
Last term much was achieved and celebrated. We were so proud to attend the performance of The Sound of Music, held at the Shedley Theatre in the last week of Term 3. With over 80 students involved and 14 staff assisting, this year’s musical rose to a new level of excellence. Musical Director, Ms Kerryn Harris, led the talented group to showcase their strong singing, acting and dancing. We held the ‘Junior School Performing Arts Showcase’ with over 100 children participating and showcasing their musical talents. Over 100 students also participated in the 'College Arts Competition'.
Last term it was a joy to witness our Reception students reach an important milestone as they celebrated ‘100 Days of Learning’. An exceptional achievement was made by Year 9 ‘Team Magnitude’, who won the ‘F1 in Schools’ State competition. They will travel to Sydney to compete in the National competition early next year. Our Senior Students participated in the ‘Brain Bee Neuroscience’ competition and won the video competition at Flinders University. Debating continued with strong performances by our Year 9 girls team. For the first time, 27 students from Year 9 and Year 10 participated in an ‘Independent Study Program’ as an elective. They enrolled in various online programs with universities across the world.
We have also been very proud of the many sporting achievements around the College. The inaugural ‘Northern Schools Girls Soccer League’ was launched with our Open Girls team being minor premiers and then losing the Grand Final by one penalty shootout to Trinity College. Year 12 student, Isabella Kouimtzis, represented the state in Soccer and played the ‘School Sport Australia Soccer Championships’ in Sydney recently. Our Year 7 and Year 8 boys won the ‘Division 2 Statewide Knockout Soccer Competition’. Anthony Kationis Nemes (Year 10), Brody Fowler (Year 8) and Levi Fowler (Year 6) attended the ‘West Ham United Soccer Academy’ on the Gold Coast at the end of Term 3. Year 11 student, Aleah Poole, who represented South Australia in Gymnastics, won a silver medal for the floor event at the Bigham Cup Challenge held in Northern Territory and finished second overall.
Congratulations to the following students who received the most Gold Slips across the College: Aubrey Miasco (Year 3), Amelia Hudson (Year 5), Awel Malou (Year 6), Harrysen Cameron (Year 10) and Kevin Hau (Year 10). Students receive Gold Slips for making positive contributions to their learning, to others and to the life of the College.
Once again, thank you to the whole community for raising $6722.10 at the Fete on Saint Columba Day last term. The donation now has been forwarded to St Vincent de Paul and the Anglican Board of Missions. An outstanding outcome for those most in need.
Finally, we farewelled and thanked Mr Alan Chaplin who retired at the end of Term 3 after 25 years of loyal service both as a teacher and education support officer. We wish Alan all the best in the future.
We have much to be grateful at the College. As we begin this term, I thank you for your support to foster a school community that reflects the values of the Gospel; welcome, inclusion, respect, compassion, reconciliation and forgiveness. We pray for a happy and safe Term 4.
