What will I learn:

Year 9 Textiles and Fashion, provides students the opportunity to learn about textiles and their application.  Students throughout practical lessons learn a range of sewing techniques and skills through basic hand and machine sewing. As well as develop knowledge and understanding about different fabric materials, their uses and sustainability of the fashion industry.

Through implementing the design process (design, plan, produce and evaluate) students will create a pencil case and pyjama shorts.

In Year 9 Textiles and Fashion you will explore the following topics:

Mastering the Basics: Students will learn the fundamentals and safety aspects involved in hand and machine sewing. Including identification of the parts and function of a sewing machine and learning a range of different stitches through the creation of a softie toy.

Pencil Case: Students will design and produce a pencil case of their choice. With skill development of inserting a zip.

Pyjama Shorts:  Students learn to use a simple pattern to design and produce pyjama shorts. Throughout the construction students learn the techniques of creating elastic casings.  

What attributes do I need:

You need to be someone who likes hands on learning experiences, can work independently to produce designed solutions while demonstrating creativity, safe use of a sewing machine and effective time management.

Practical (60%)

  • Mastering the basics folio
  • Pencil Case Product
  • Pyjama Pants Product

Folio (40%)

  • Theory Tasks
  • Design folio (Pencil Case and Pyjama Shorts)

Evaluation (Pencil Case and Pyjama Shorts)
