Providing information and advice on subject choices, tertiary options, vocational learning (VET) and careers.
Welcome to Futures Counselling at St Columba College. The College provides students, parents and caregivers with information and advice on subject choices, tertiary options, vocational learning (VET) and careers through a variety of avenues and primarily through contact with the Futures Counsellor, Mr Shane Dowling. The Futures Counselling webpage is a vital platform for parents, caregivers and students to keep informed and updated on important events, news and notifications concerning tertiary education, career options and subject counselling.
Contact with the Futures Counsellor throughout the year is encouraged to make sure your child's future pathways are discussed, options are explored, key dates are received and application processes are understood. Parent and caregiver support is essential to ensure there is a close connection between home and school and to assist in providing students with a bright and successful future post school.
In Year 10, all students complete the Personal Learning Plan (PLP), a compulsory requirement of the SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education). The PLP helps students to plan their personal and learning goals for the future and make informed decisions about their personal development, education, and training. Developing goals for the future will engage students in activities such as selecting subjects, courses, and other learning relevant to pathways through and beyond school, investigating possible career choices and exploring personal and learning goals.
What is the PLP?
All students in Year 10 complete the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) as part of their Year 10 studies. Each school in South Australia designs its own Personal Learning Program which must be approved by the SACE Board. At St Columba College our program has been designed by the Fuutres Counsellor and involves a range of tasks and experiences to:
(i) identify students' skills and abilities and complete career action plans;
(ii) analyse and develop their learning strengths and set personal and learning goals;
(iii) educate and inform students about the process of subject selection in Years 11 & 12; and,
(iv) develop the SACE capabilities.
In Year 11, students are closely involved with the Head of Senior School, House Leaders, SACE/VET Coordinator and the Futures Counsellor in selecting, and if appropriate, changing subjects or courses.
In Year 12, the students consult with the Futures Counsellor in relation to the requirements of tertiary study. The Futures Counsellor organises guest speakers from various tertiary institutions to present information sessions as part of the House Kinship Program and provides guidance to students when they are required to record their preferences for tertiary study through SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre). Students and their parents can organise individual interviews with the Futures Counsellor at any time throughout the year to discuss and/or explore tertiary and post school options.
