Year 6 student, Massimo Sergi, was recently awarded Runner Up in the Fairest and Best U12s Div 2 SANFL Juniors Association Medal Count with a total of 26 votes. Playing football for the Salisbury Magpies Football Club, Massimo was awarded with a medal and certificate at the Association Medal Presentation Night held at the Central District Football Club.
The Association Medal is an achievement to be proud of, with 160 players from the eight teams in Massimo’s division (Div 2) in the running to win. Each player within the division receives votes from the umpires which are then revealed on the Association Medal Presentation Night.
Massimo’s natural ball-sport ability started with soccer and has led into football. He started playing football at 10 years of age.
“I've always wanted to play footy and now I do!” Massimo said.
“My dad inspired me to play footy because he used to play and we often have a kick in the backyard.”
Playing in his first Grand Final on 9 September at Alberton Oval (Port Adelaide's home ground), Massimo kicked 1 goal and 2 points.
Massimo’s Div 2 team has now been moved up to Div 1. Just one step up in what looks to be a great football future for the Year 6 student who dreams of playing for the Australian Football League AFL in the future.
“My ultimate dream is to win two premierships, a Brownlow Medal and three Coalmen Medals. Or even just to play an AFL game!” Massimo said.
St Columba College has supported Massimo’s football goals through ‘talking footy’ with him and encouraging him in the sport.
“I’m always chatting with Mr McGinty in the Junior School about footy, especially the Swans and Power games,” Massimo said.
“It’s great to hear that Mr Gladigau and Ms Carr are football enthusiasts as well.”
Keep an eye on this football champ, already kicking goals towards his future!
