St Columba College is celebrating the outstanding achievements of Awer Mabil, a 2013 College graduate and talented Adelaide United football winger, after snapping up a lucrative opportunity to join Danish champions FC Midtjylland.
From humble origins in South Sudan to a Kenyan Refugee camp, it has already been quite a journey for the young man. Awer made his debut with United while still in school, at St Columba College, describing the butterflies in his first game time for United.
“When I started training with the first team I was still in Year 10. After training they named me in the squad… So I was like, this isn’t happening, you know, I couldn’t believe it!”
On Tuesday night, St Columba College had the opportunity to say “congratulations” and “all the best” at a family celebration held at the College. Hosted by Awer’s uncle and St Columba staff member David Amol, it was a wonderful opportunity to hear Awer’s family speak humbly of him, the support of his fans and his respect for the opportunities he’s received, all conveyed with dignity and grace.
Thanking those that have supported him along his journey, Awer still remains grounded in truth and belief thanking “my family for the support they have given me and the opportunity it has provided me in life and that is not to forget God who gave me this blessed gift to be a footballer”.
The 19 year old flew to Europe Tuesday evening where he will start training with his new team later in the week pending a medical. It is understood FC Midtjylland have been scouting the young attacker since he went on trial with Dutch giant Ajax Amsterdam in January.
All the best Awer and we will be waiting in anticipation for your debut!
