Australia Day Events 2020

January 26 is an important day when the community gathers to reflect on the story of Australia beginning over 65,000 years ago. The Australia Day Council encourages us to reflect on our history, its highs and its lows and to celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people including the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We acknowledge and reinforce the present and the future of Aboriginal cultures, celebrating the reality that Indigenous cultures are strong, with much to be positive about despite the negative effects of colonisation. Ray Minniecon, Aboriginal pastor and leader invites us to “Commemorate” Australia Day rather than “Celebrate” – similarly to how we approach ANZAC Day.
